The problems in Harold Walker’s latest essay, amusingly titled “The Facts of Life”, start with his very first line: Digital Modulation is usually a form of pulse modulation, of which, there are two types-Pulse Width and Pulse position. What about pulse amplitude modulation (PAM), phase shift keying (PSK) and frequency shift keying (FSK), just to mention a few others? All pulses are analyzed by means of their Fourier Transform. Yes, they certainly can be. It’s too bad that Walker doesn’t know how to do it. The transform consists of two parts: 1) a series of frequencies, that when added will create the original pulse shape. 2) A change in amplitude that varies with the pulse width or pulse spacing. The two are seen in Equation 1. Figure 1 shows a series of square wave pulses. Walker is thoroughly confused. The continuous Fourier transform consists of a single integral:
